The Alembic Press

THE ALEMBIC PRESS

Proprietor: Claire Bolton

The Alembic Press is situated in a large 70ft long stone barn across a courtyard from its 13th century farmhouse. One end of the barn houses Claire with the presses (including an Albion, Vandercook, Farley, Sigwalt, etc.) and bindery, and the other end houses David with the Monotype equipment (super caster, composition casters and keyboards).

The Press has been active since 1972, and has published over 130 books. Most of the Press's titles are on the subjects of paper, type, printing and other aspects of book arts, but we also produce the occasional more 'artistic' book and a range of miniature books. As we have a large collection of metal and wood types, as well as various presses, and just enough space in the barn, we are able to run letterpress workshops from time to time. In recent years we have also built up a small collection of Monotype equipment, and so are able to cast the type for our books in-house. However, using Monotype is a long learning experience, and as yet we do not undertake casting for other people, apart from occasional experiments!
